In the past three weeks, more than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims, an ethnic minority group, have fled their homes in Myanmar, also known as Burma, in what the United Nations human rights chief has called “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” The conflict in Myanmar erupted one month ago, after a militant Muslim group attacked army security posts in the country’s west coast state of Rakhine.. Myanmar’s army responded in retaliation. Refugees have told aid workers that the military has set fire to their homes and planted land mines along their escape routes. The de facto leader of the country’s civilian government, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, claims military operations have ended.. Human rights groups say they are ongoing, The White House and State Department have also called for the violence against civilians stop and humanitarian aid must begin. The recently signed National Defense Authorization Act would have increased military assistance to Myanmar. Congress is reevaluating that position.
