Iran Films “Underground City” Of Ballistic Missiles In Provocative Snub Of US And EU
ZeroHedge – Late last week Iran’s Revolutionary Guard unveiled a new surface-to-surface ballistic missile that Iran’s military touts as possessing a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), according to the elite force’s Sepah News.
The IRGC released footage of the new missile stored deep inside what state media called an “underground” ballistic missile production facility in what appears the latest provocative snub to US and European leaders, who’ve recently demanded Iran halt all missile development and tests, but which Tehran has said is for defensive reasons and therefore legal within the framework of the 2015 JCPOA.
Fars News published video of IRGC commander-in-chief Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari and aerospace commander Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh showcasing the new missile, called Dezful, described as having “twice the destructive power” of the older Zolfaghar model, which had a range of 700 kilometers, according to statements by Hajizadeh.
And in comments aimed directly at the West, IRGC chief Jafari said, “Displaying this missile production facility deep underground is an answer to Westerners… who think they can stop us from reaching our goals through sanctions and threats,” according to the AFP. The location of the facility, which appeared to show multiple rockets, was undisclosed.
“Europeans talk of limiting our defensive capability while they have the audacity [to allow] their offensive power be used to attack innocent people all over the world,” he added.
This came within the same week the European Union issued a formal statement urging Iran to abandon all ballistic missile activity, and to further cease “intervention” in regional conflicts. The EU was reacting to a recent successful test of a new cruise missile named Hoveizeh, which has a purported range of 1,350 kilometers.

EU will dissolve like Soviet Union unless Europeans ‘wake up’, George Soros warns
RT – The “sleeping pro-Europe majority” must “wake up” before the EU goes the way of the Soviet Union, billionaire George Soros has warned, adding that Europe’s political parties must give the bloc’s interests first priority.
Pro-EU political parties must rally support ahead of crucial European Parliament elections in May, the Hungarian-American businessman and controversial influencer wrote in an op-ed published by Project Syndicate.
The bloc is “sleepwalking into oblivion” and could soon meet the same end as the Soviet Union, Soros prophesized. In order to avoid catastrophe, he argued, right-minded political parties must resist the lure of EU skepticism sweeping across the continent and “put Europe’s interests ahead of their own.” He chastised Germany’s ruling coalition for not being adequately pro-EU out of fear of losing votes to the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), while praising the German Greens for being “the only consistently pro-European party in the country.”
The outspoken opponent of Brexit suggested that it wasn’t too late for the UK to hold another referendum, “or, even better, for revoking Britain’s Article 50 notification” – advocacy which appears to clash with Soros’ self-declared affinity for democracy. In the UK, the billionaire has been sharply criticized for forking over £800,000 (US$1,062,000) to pro-EU campaigns, including £400,000 to Best for Britain, a campaign group that has been at the forefront of anti-Brexit activism.
On the topic of Italy, Soros chided the EU for “strictly enforcing” an agreement “which unfairly burdens countries like Italy where migrants first enter the EU.” As a result, the massive influx of migrants into Europe has transformed the once pro-EU Italy into a bastion of populism, Soros lamented.
Curiously, he failed to mention that he is a leading champion of the EU’s open-door migrant policy – a policy which is directly responsible for Italy being swamped with asylum seekers.

Ted Cruz Revives ‘EL CHAPO’ Bill to Pay for Border Wall
Breitbart – Following the conviction of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in a New York federal court on Tuesday, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) revived his call to pay for border wall construction with the assets seized from drug traffickers. The Texas senator first introduced the “EL CHAPO” Act in 2017.
“America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all 10 counts,” Senator Cruz said in a tweet on Tuesday. He said that prosecutors are seeking the seizure of $14 billion in “drug profits and other assets” from the jailed drug lord and that those funds should go toward building the border wall.
Unprecedented Gun Confiscation Hits US as Thousands Of Guns Seized from Innocent Citizens
DC Dirty Laundry – As politicians and anti-gun rights activists continuously chant, “we don’t want to take your guns,” behind the scenes — in only the year — politicians have been working overtime to limit your right to bear arms. These laws are all a reaction to the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida and, like most politicians always do, they are not letting this tragedy go to waste.
Since the tragic shooting in Florida last February, the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence has recorded a whopping 55 new gun control measures in 26 states—in just the first six months of the year.
Some of these laws being passed are ‘Red Flag’ laws which are used to disarm individuals who are reported as a threat by a family member or friend. Many believe that these red flag laws are dangerous as they can prompt police action with little to no due process.
As a recent report out of FOX32, points out, nine states have passed laws over the past year allowing police or household members to seek court orders requiring people deemed threatening to temporarily surrender their guns, bringing the total to 14. Several more are likely to follow in the months ahead.
To show how willing these states are to use these laws, an unprecedented 1,700 orders to seize guns were issued in 2018, likely resulting in the confiscation of thousands of guns. What’s more is the fact that this number is likely far greater because there is no requirement to report these numbers and this data doesn’t include California who has recently implemented some of the most draconian gun laws in the country.
To those who may be in favor of such laws, consider the following: There is no way to stop an estranged spouse from calling police repeatedly and telling them their ex is threatening to cause harm to others.
Anyone, any time, now has the ability to claim someone else is a threat and have police take their guns. One does not need to delve into the multiple ‘what if’ scenarios to see what sort of ominous implications arise from such a practice. Luckily, some states have put in checks that require further investigation before police go in to take someone’s guns.
Although it is not perfect, an example of one of these red flag laws with a system of checks is in Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed laws last year authorizing judges to take weapons away from people facing problems that make them dangerous to themselves or others. However, the person making the claim has 14 days to produce “clear and convincing” evidence that the person in question is potentially dangerous and should have weapons taken from him or her for up to six months.
Although the ostensible intention of these recently passed laws is to stop a future tragedy, it is important to point out that there were already laws on the books that should’ve stopped Nikolas Cruz from ever getting a gun. But the none of them worked.
California Governor Pulls Plug On Statewide High-Speed Rail Project
ZeroHedge – California won’t be building a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles after all, as Governor Gavin Newsom (D) announced on Tuesday that the project would “cost too much and, respectfully, take too long.”
“We face hard decisions that are coming due,” said Newsom. “The choices we make will shape our future, and the future of quite literally millions, for decades to come.”
Newsom told a joint session of the Legislature that, for the high-speed rail, “there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A. I wish there were.” –SF Chronicle
The project – the type of transportation centerpiece included in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s so-called “Green New Deal,” was slated to cost California taxpayers approximately $77 billion, with a completion date of 2033.
Newsom says that instead of a statewide system, he wants the high-speed rail line to go from Merced to Bakersfield along California’s Central Valley, which he says could bring an economic transformation to the state’s agricultural region.
Totally abandoning the project would require the state to return $3.5 billion of federal dollars.
In 2008, California voters approved a $10 billion bond for a bullet train between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The state finally broke ground in 2015 on a 119-mile segment between Madera and Bakersfield – however it quickly began to blow through deadlines and budgets.
Newsom said he would appoint a new chair of the High-Speed Rail Authority, his economic development director Lenny Mendonca, and bring more transparency to the project by posting spending online. He also vowed to push for more federal and private funding to eventually complete the entire line.
“But let’s get something done once and for all,” he said.
Newsom, who had previously toyed with the idea, also committed to a preference for one delta tunnel, rather than the twin tunnels that former Gov. Jerry Brown wanted to build.
Last October, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison panned the $77 billion project.
“Trains leave when you don’t want to leave, from a place you don’t want to leave from, and take you to a place you don’t want to go to, at a time you don’t want to get there, and then you have to get into a car and go wherever you’re going. It is a crazy system,” said Ellison during an interview with Fox’s Maria Bartiromo.

ZeroHedge – As China’s mass incarceration of members of its Uighur Muslim minority in its far-flung Xinjiang province has elicited condemnation from editorial boards of US newspapers to, more recently, the leader of one of the world’s largest Muslim nations, one of America’s most famous private security contractors – and, incidentally, brother to President Trump’s secretary of education, has found himself caught up in the burgeoning controversy.
Five years after gaining the favor of the chairman of one of China’s largest conglomerates, Blackwater founder Erik Prince, who became chairman of Hong Kong-based Frontier Services Group (which, instead of offering private mercenary armies for hire, claims to provide training and support services) back in 2013, has been steadily stepping back from the firm he helped build as he cedes more and more control to forces in the mainland.
And now, FSG has become caught up in a controversy surrounding China’s detention of more than one million Uighur’s in “re-education camps”, thanks to reports of a contract awarded to FSG to build a “training facility” in Xinjiang that critics feared would be used as a detention center.
But according to a Bloomberg report published on Sunday, Prince denied the company’s involvement in the facility, and insisted that his decision to step down as chairman of FSG in December was a strategic move intended to help the company win contracts for mega-projects on the mainland.
Now FSG has drawn international attention for a signing ceremony to build a training center in far western China, where the Chinese government has detained as many as a million Uighur Muslims in political camps. The statement, made in Chinese, was subsequently removed from the firm’s website. Prince distanced himself from the region in a statement to Bloomberg.
“Erik Prince has no plans, desire nor interest to engage in any activity whatsoever either personally, through FSG or any other vehicle in Xinjiang Province now or at any time in the future,” an FSG spokesman added.
Unlike Blackwater, which became infamous after killing 14 Iraqi civilians in a Baghdad square, FSG focuses on logistics and security, rather than paramilitary operations.
Nonetheless, FSG’s controversial business with the Chinese government has thrust Prince back into the spotlight. Critics accuse FSG of potentially helping the Beijing government engage in mass repression of ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in western Xinjiang and, in the process, advancing the geopolitical agenda of a strategic U.S. competitor.
In an interview with BBG from before the Xinjiang facility scandal broke, Prince insisted that he’s a “proud American who would never do anything against the national interest.” Shortly after, the Pentagon and the DNI himself declared that China and Russia’s collusion to counter US interests across the globe represented the biggest threat to US security.
Exclusive: U.S. senators to again try to pass Russia sanctions bill
Reuters – U.S. Republican and Democratic senators on Wednesday will introduce a bill seeking to punish Russia for meddling in U.S. elections and for its aggression in Ukraine by imposing sanctions on its banking, energy sector and foreign debt.
The bill will be introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and is a tougher version of the one the two lawmakers backed last year but which failed to pass, Menendez’s office said. The bill has been seen by Reuters.
Among other things, it would impose sanctions on Russian banks that support efforts to interfere in foreign elections, sanction Russian liquefied natural gas projects outside of Russia, sanction the country’s cyber sector, impose sanctions on new sovereign debt and sanction individuals deemed to “facilitate illicit and corrupt activities, directly or indirectly, on behalf of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

State Proposes Bill to Treat Gold and Silver as Money to Directly Fight Federal Reserve Monopoly
Free Thought Project – Bills introduced in the Tennessee legislature would define gold and silver specie as legal tender and eliminate sales taxes levied on it. Passage of these bills would pave the way for Tennessee residents to use gold and silver in everyday transactions, a foundational step for the people to undermine the Federal Reserve’s monopoly on money.
Sen. Steve Southerland (R-Morristown) introduced Senate Bill 978 (SB978) on Feb. 6. Rep. Rick Eldridge (R-Morristown) introduced the House companion bill (HB1323) the same day. Titled the Tennessee Legal Tender Act, the legislation would make gold and silver legal tender in the state, meaning it would be recognized as a medium of exchange for the payment of debts and taxes. Practically speaking, gold and silver specie would be treated as money, putting it on par with Federal Reserve notes in Tennessee.
Specie legal tender would be defined as:
(1) Specie coin issued by the United States government at any time; and
(2) Any other specie that a court of competent jurisdiction, by final and unappealable order, rules to be within state authority to make or designate as legal tender.
By allowing the court to designate additional specie to be used as legal tender, Tennessee could free its citizens from potential supply constraints imposed by the use of only United States minted gold and silver coin. More importantly, the people of the state of Tennessee would be able to define what specie is considered constitutional tender, further distancing themselves from potential control of their competing currency by Washington D.C.
SB978/HB1323 would also repeal the state sales tax on gold or silver specie.

National debt tops $22 trillion for the first time as experts warn of ripple effects
USAToday – The national debt surpassed $22 trillion for the first time on Tuesday, a milestone that experts warned is further proof the country is on an unsustainable financial path that could jeopardize the economic security of every American.
The Treasury Department reported the debt hit $22.012 trillion, a jump of more than $30 billion in just this month.
The national debt has been rising at a faster rate following the passage of President Donald Trump’s $1.5 trillion tax-cut package a little more than a year ago and as the result of congressional efforts to increase spending on domestic and military programs. The nation has added more than $1 trillion in debt in the last 11 months alone.
“Reaching this unfortunate milestone so rapidly is the latest sign that our fiscal situation is not only unsustainable but accelerating,” said Michael A. Peterson, chief executive officer of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a nonpartisan organization working to address the country’s long-term fiscal challenges.
For Americans, the growing debt should be a concern, experts said, because over time it can push up interest rates for consumers and businesses. The higher rates can ripple through the economy, nudging up rates for mortgages, corporate bonds and other types of consumer and business loans.
Bulgaria freezes accounts of Venezuelan state oil firm after Washington ‘tip-off’
RT – Authorities in Bulgaria have blocked transfers out of bank accounts belonging to Venezuelan state-controlled energy corporation PDVSA, according to Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov.
Sofia apparently received information about transfers made by the Venezuelan oil giant, via its accounts in Bulgaria, to reportedly channel the money elsewhere. Washington was the key source of the information, according to Tsatsarov.
The top official stressed that Venezuelan funds were partially transferred to some other countries and Bulgarian law-enforcement agencies were suspicious about where the funds were headed. Caracas reportedly used the funds for backing some sports federations, purchasing food supplies, and other humanitarian projects.
Bulgarian authorities are set to decide whether to open a criminal case into money laundering after a complete inspection of transfer details.
“We have established that there were money transfers from Venezuela, namely from the state oil company of Venezuela to these accounts,” the top official said during a joint press conference with US Ambassador to Bulgaria Eric Rubin, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.
“All measures have been taken so that the funds that are still in the accounts, which are not in small amounts, will be fully under our control and not leave the country on false grounds.”
The mentioned transactions included several million euros, according to the chief of Bulgaria’s domestic security agency DANS Dimitar Georgiev.
Last week, Bulgaria’s government expressed support for its partners in the European Union, who had previously recognized Venezuela’s self-declared president Juan Guaido.

Now in 24 States, ‘Zombie Deer’ Disease Could Spread to Humans
Off The Grid News – An infectious diseases expert has warned that chronic wasting disease, which is killing deer in the Upper Midwest and has been reported in at least 24 states, could infect humans in the near future.
Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told lawmakers recently that chronic wasting disease (CWD) should be treated as a public health issue, the Pioneer Press reported.
“It is probable that human cases of CWD associated with the consumption of contaminated meat will be documented in the years ahead,” Osterholm said. “It is possible that the number of human cases will be substantial and will not be isolated events.”
As of January, CWD has been found in deer, elk or moose in at least 24 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. It is also found in farmed deer and elk.
CWD is caused by a malformed protein — or prion — that infects animals’ brains, according to the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Because of its symptoms, some people have called it “zombie deer disease.”
The CDC said symptoms include drastic weight loss, stumbling, lack of coordination, listlessness, drooling, lack of fear of people and aggression. An animal could carry the infection for more than a year and not show any signs of CWD.

President Trump signs executive order on national AI strategy
Fed Scoop – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday revealing his administration’s cohesive plan for American leadership in the development of artificial intelligence.
The “American AI Initiative” lays out a “multi-pronged approach” to the challenge, focused around five pillars. First, the order directs federal agencies to prioritize AI when crafting research and development budgets. It also prompts agencies to make data and computing resources available to AI researchers outside the government, asks them to set up fellowship programs and trainings to help workers gain AI-relevant tech skills, and commits to international collaboration on AI with America’s allies.
Finally, the order calls for the development of an AI governance framework. “As AI moves from the research laboratory to commercialization, regulatory guidance must also be updated to promote innovation, while also building public trust in AI,” a senior administration official said in a press call. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Domestic Policy Council and the National Economic Council, together with regulatory agencies, are tasked with creating this guidance.
“In last week’s State of the Union address, President Trump committed to investing in cutting-edge Industries of the Future,” OSTP Deputy CIO Michael Kratsios said in a statement. “The American AI Initiative follows up on that promise with decisive action to ensure AI is developed and applied for the benefit of the American people. ‘Space is not your property!’ Beijing blasts US report on China & Russia ‘weaponizing’ space
RT – A new US intelligence report portraying Moscow and Beijing as trying to bring warfare into the heavens has drawn the ire of China, which insists that space is not Washington’s “private property.”“I want to make it clear that outer space belongs to all mankind. It is not exclusively owned by any one country and especially not the private property of the US,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, referring to the latest paper by the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
Hua slammed the “unwarranted and utterly baseless comments” in the DIA report, saying China stands for the peaceful use of space and opposes its militarization.
“For many years,” the spokeswoman stated, “China, Russia and other countries have been working hard and trying to reach an international legal instrument to fundamentally prevent the weaponization of or an arms race in outer space.”
The DIA report – which comes amid Donald Trump’s cosmic endeavors such as the establishment of the Space Command – fans fears of US dominance being challenged everywhere, including space. Russia and China “view space as important to modern warfare and view counterspace capabilities as a means to reduce US and allied military effectiveness,” it claims, noting that both countries have done much to boost their capabilities.
“These capabilities provide their militaries… with enhanced situational awareness, enabling them to monitor, track, and target US and allied forces,” the DIA says.
Doom From Space: NASA Predicts ‘Apocalyptic’ Valentine’s Day in 2019
Sputnik – While the US space agency provided directions to people who might wish to spot the “apocalypse asteroid”, it also noted that doing so would be impossible without a telescope due to the space rock’s relatively small size.
As people around the world begin celebrating Valentine’s Day, NASA reveals that stargazers will be treated to a unique show during the occasion.
According to the space agency, planet Mars will be visible in the sky this month as a red dot that can be spotted a couple of hours after sunset.
But on 14 February, the Bennu asteroid — a 1,600-foot rock weighing about 87 million tonnes which currently orbits the Sun between Earth and Mars, and which was branded as an “apocalypse asteroid” by the media — “will be located just to the right of Mars, about the width of your fist held at arm’s length”.
“So on the 14th give a little wave to Bennu-and OSIRIS-Rex while you’re at it,” the space agency wrote in a post.
As NASA points out, however, Bennu is simply too small to be seen without a telescope.

Trump’s free market approach to drug pricing will help lower costs
The Hill – During President Trump’s State of the Union speech, he spoke about the urgent need to lower prescription drug prices. He talked about global freeloading and the injustice of Americans paying more for drugs that are made here than foreign countries do. He discussed the need for price transparency, where drug manufacturers reveal their list prices on television ads and elsewhere. The president also discussed the need for legislation that ensures drug discounts are transferred directly to the consumer.
Under the current system, middle managers, like pharmacy benefit managers and insurers negotiate prices with the drug companies.
Price transparency sheds a spotlight on the price problem, which include the rate of increase for drug company list prices and the expandedCenter for Medicare and Medicaid Services drug dashboards.
Two bills passed last fall: Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act and the Know the Lowest Price Act. Both of these removed pharmacy gag clauses, which stopped pharmacists from telling customers if prescriptions would cost less if they paid out of pocket rather than using their insurance. This enables my patients to make more informed, cost-saving decisions.
Another Trump proposal aimed at increasing price transparency involves directing pharmaceutical companies to include list prices in their TV ads to consumers.
The Trump administration and HHS should be applauded for their efforts to extend and expand price transparency. Johnson & Johnson just became the first drug company to comply with the TV ad proposal, as they will include the list price for their most widely prescribed medication, the blood thinner Xarelto (used to treat blood clots and help prevent strokes) which costs $450 to $540 per month.
This price will flash across the screen at the end of every commercial for the drug and J & J is considering expanding this practice to other drugs.
Finally, there is the concern about what President Trump has called“global freeloading.” During his State of the Union Address, President Trump suggested a new policy which would “allow Medicare to determine the price it pays for certain drugs based on the cheaper prices paid by other nations.”
These price controls may help to bring down Medicare drug prices. Another approach I favor would be to place export taxes on drugs manufactured here to make sure that negotiated prices by foreign governments are in keeping with what my patients or their insurances are paying.
There is some evidence that the Trump administration’s approach is already having an impact, with growth in prescription spending beginning to slow and out of pocket spending for drugs remaining flat.

For the study, the researchers aimed to determine the levels of THMs in various types of ready-to-eat vegetables after being washed with chlorinated water. Then, they compared the levels to current safety standards set by the European Union (EU) and the U.S. for levels of THMs in food processing water supplies.
The researchers investigated a total of 115 vegetables. The results revealed that the vegetables had absorbed an alarmingly high concentration of THMs, with an average total of nearly 77 parts per billion (ppb). In water used for food processing, the current limits are set to 80 micrograms per liter (?g/L). The researchers also found that chloroform had the highest concentration in all the vegetables investigated.
