Dear Editor,
It is with a sense of amusement that I review your editorial to ban handguns. It is against the law to ban anything. That’s the law of supply and demand by the way. As I recall, the items that are the root cause of our troubles are already banned. They are narcotics. Tell me one school where they are not openly sold by nefarious characters? Tell me one neighbourhood where the effects of the fentanyl crisis is not being felt? I work in the downtown. It’s denigrated into an open air mental asylum and prison. There isn’t a day that goes by where there isn’t an incident of the deranged committing atrocious acts or some petty criminal not stealing from the vulnerable.
The only thing bans can do is move the point of intersection of the supply and demand curves. That’s up by the way. At that point organized crime is induced to meet the demand in a lucrative trade. Since they can’t compete like more normal businesses, they use violence to control markets and competition. It is this violence that is the symptom we experience with gun violence. The disease is the drug problem. Some free thinkers are realizing the Portugal solution is the only solution. They decriminalized drugs. The supply and demand curve point of intersection fell drastically. I would go further in having the state give out the drugs so the intersection point falls to zero. The addicts can be baited to treatment. Organized crime has their business model destroyed.
A handgun ban will open another more lucrative sideline to the narcotics trafficker. In fact they are already making use of that at this time. They are selling weapons. There is another principle in science you are wholly unaware of. It is the path of least resistance. Whether a living organism or a material thing, the path of least resistance is the winner. If you set up a monumental infrastructure, those of the fringe will find their guns supplied without a licence, or background check, or registration. They will not understand the complex laws in place, and they won’t care. It appears Faisal acquired a pistol from the illegal least path of resistance border smuggling operation. Your advice to ban handguns and attack persons in the system smacks of basic lowest common denominator human reactions. Punish those who have nothing to do with anything to satiate your desire to exact punishment on a crime. Lynching was a past example. The armies that had a monopoly on the use of force massacred civilians in the area where partisans attacked them. So I must question your motives as psychologically dark.
Let us assume by some miracle there were no handguns. It is obvious you have no idea about ballistic trauma. Imagine Faisal acquired a notorious Mini-14 or a shotgun. There would most likely have been no survivors. That would be your great victory. If there were no guns at all perhaps, the truck could have done so much more. I worked in the holdup business for many long years. I’ve been though some of Toronto’s most lurid armed robbery scenarios. That’s the armored car industry by the way. I prayed if I was going to be shot at, it would be with a handgun and not a high powered rifle or shotgun. They are the least powerful and least accurate firearms. The previously banned calibers of .25 and .32 fired from a short inaccurate barrel at the top of the list. A high powered hunting rifle with a telescopic sight wouldn’t have left much of me. You may recall the Texas shooting of that nature.
There was an era when logic was held dear. The laws of thought of Aristotle are just that too, laws. Our emotional reactions to stimulus cannot remotely compete. What is is no matter how much we try to convince ourselves it is not. Our misinterpretations must be cast aside as the excluded middle. Anything that violates the laws of supply and demand fall into this category. I remember when the Firearms Act went though the house. I wrote extensively to parliamentarians then. I told the Justice Minister Alan Rock if you pass this bill C-68, you will turn Toronto into Dodge City. I’m sure he thought that was funny. Are we laughing still?
There is another battle being waged within the body. It is the effects of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRI’s. These chemicals effect the brain chemistry. In their measured controlled doses they have assisted some people with mental illness. However, if a person stops taking them the brain chemical serotonin may not be produced by the person for some period of time. Homicidal and suicidal tenancies may service. I used to bet my colleague after every bizarre twisted crime it was another Prozac moment. His wife worked in the prison system. It didn’t take long to find out. I never lost a bet.
Faisal had mental health issues. It is beyond belief he wasn’t on or even off SSRI’s. The other common expression is he’s off his meds. Even the most unsophisticated understand. The shining Toronto Star, the mayor and may others do not. Of course Mr. Rock’s executive assistant got a seven figure salary to go to one of the pharmaceutical companies. It seems we can’t look at this issue in the highly charged times, but as our friend Aristotle taught, what is is. What is worse is our leaders will abandon principle to make money. What is worse than that is our controlled media won’t report it while perpetuating the illusion of a free and democratic society. That’s why people are abandoning the print media like the newspapers. From the days of Hearst to Operation Mockingbird, the CIA’s attempt to control public opinion via the press, we have been propagandized. My analogy is once you know the well is poisoned, only the fool continues to draw water from it. Only a bigger fool would pay for it.
So there we have it. It is impossible for peace in the valley to be reached with the proposed models. The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing knowing it can’t work. Bloodletting lasted a very long time. Rigid forms of thinking have killed many more people than handguns I’m sure. The blood of victims is on many non shootings hands, but they relish their angers and hatreds and ponder their future earnings.
As a case in point, I’m sure you never heard about the great Taco Bell massacre in Scarborough in the 90’s. I worked an overtime shift on an emergency cash run one evening. We stopped at a Taco Bell to eat. A car pulled up. A man got out. He retrieved what could very well be a handgun from the trunk of his car, put it under his jacket and walked to the door. I was sitting at the first table. I told my partner to be ready to hit the floor. I put my hand on my handgun. We made eye contact. The man looked down, saw I was armed, raised his other arm and backed slowly away. There was no shooting. Was he a drug soldier or a crazed individual we will never know, but the peace was not shattered because the handgun in the lawful hand deterred the one in the unlawful.
If by whatever miracle I was there that day had not happened, there would be more casualties to speak of. With regard to Diamond John Tory, he is a pompous ass. He was my MPP when the Conservative party parachuted leaders into the staunchest conservative riding. Enron Ernie Eves was another. We voted liberal to end the abuse. By the way that riding has the lowest crime rate in Ontario and a very high level of gun ownership. If your logic about the ownership of guns relating to crime had merit, we would see it here. Aristotle’s laws speak differently. You ignore them at your own risk.
A good generation ago when an event like this happened the individual would be described as going Rambo in inference to the PTSD of the Vietnam veteran. Faisal was reportedly in Afghanistan and Pakistan. What was he doing there? You must understand the government employs various sorts of soldiers to go undercover in these regions as intelligence operatives. Their C.V.’s are not for public scrutiny. Their history of denial and cover up intense. That would be my preferred investigatory trail understanding the ways of the world including the Hegelian Dialectic. Was he one of our national security operatives gone awry? If he was, banning handguns will never have an effect. He was known to all levels of police and not on the radar. That implies they were not in a position to take action. It can only mean he or his handlers had a higher security status than they do. A pleasant story will be concocted. A strategy of tension will be invoked and the matter will rest.
As a member of Reporters Without Borders, that’s where I start looking. The truth is like the dance of a thousand veils. You can’t even begin to imagine it until you’re down to the last few. Was he ISIS? Was he a state agent infiltrating ISIS? He wasn’t part of the sport shooting fraternity. That’s for sure. They are being pilloried again for nothing. You could elevate your paper from rag to responsible and perhaps restore readership. I remember the days when writing another John your publisher. We shared many interesting points. Above all a reporter should be investigative not subservient to codifying propaganda. That feeds into the demise of social order and makes slaves of us all.
Sincerely yours,
Mr. George Freund,
